CONTINUOUS LEARNING - A LOVELY EXPERIENCE

Backed with focussed classroom lesson observation, mentoring and handholding, I made the following observations on Knowledge learned, Skills acquired and Values gained by students in the process

1. The teachers generally do not lack knowledge of their subject. Even if they are challenged, they learn and prepare by using every possible resources. Teachers are able to deliver concepts learned, correctly and confidently. With experience in years, teacher are able to manage knowledge and deliver the same for students with relevance.

2. Teachers are able to innovate and manage ways to engage students into learning pace, with increasing ease, and with more experience in teaching career. However, with growing need for relevance, scientific models and strategies, the teachers need to put their conscious effort to use their teaching skills and strategies to make students learn concept related skills. There is an apparent need for teachers to either learn relevant strategies or practice what was learnt.

3. Teachers need to help students not only to imbibe values of the concepts, but also to appreciate use and value of the concept learned. When this value is achieved, students gain love and enthusiasm for the knowledge and skill learned in class.

The other level of value to achieve in the class is related to teacher’s ability to evoke value from the concept learned in class. This requires exceptional knowledge, experience and practice to enable teachers feel the ‘wow factor’ for the students in the process of learning.

If a teacher fails to evoke students’ enthusiasm, joy and celebration of knowledge taught, students fail to value knowledge or skill learned. There is then no emotional ignition in the learning process, and therefore no values evoked to create deep impact of or from the concept experienced in the lesson.

Also, the teachers have to “ready” their students through their preparation, to face the world after a decade of learning during when they will actually face the situation.

HOW?

There are many creative ways to evoke this deep sense of joy in learning, like for instance through anecdotes, stories, role plays, JAM activities and demonstrations.
